Biography

Betty Sleep has been a freelance writer and author for more than 40 years. Her work covers a range of genres from fiction and non-fiction magazine articles, to the humor of the Uncle John Bathroom Readers as well as children’s and pre-teen stories, including The Littlest Elf for CBC radio and the Purrlock Holmes mystery novels, for which she won the Cat Writers Association’s Muse Medallion for Young Adult Fiction. Sleep is the 2022 winner of the Accreon Books for Young People prize from the Writers Federation of New Brunswick for her children’s short story, The Caterpillar Who Roared. Her latest middle grade chapter book “Magic in the African Bush” has been named a finalist in the AWA Children’s Book International 2023 competition. She lives in Sussex Corner, N.B., where she is harassed and inspired in equal measure, by her Birman cats.
