Christopher D. Pearce

Christopher David Pearce grew up in North Devon where he spent his childhood playing in the countryside, establishing a love of nature and folklore. Growing up as a gay man in a rural area contributed to his love of literature, particularly speculative genres which gave him a sense of escapism and, in some ways, community.

Today, he lives in Melbourne, Australia, where he is an educator for children with additional needs, a role he loves deeply and considers his calling.

Since he could read and hold a pen, Pearce has been writing stories, his main focus being horror, gothic literature, and fantasy. When not working or writing, he narrates audiobooks for indie authors, cares for dogs, and reads as often as he is able.

What inspired you to start writing?

I have been writing stories for as long as I have been able to read. As a child, I was fascinated with all things scary, and as a teen I loved medieval history. Later in life, these have merged into my passion for speculative fiction.

Who are some of your favorite authors and books?

The author I credit with first inspiring me to write was Truman Capote. Breakfast at Tiffany's I must have read at least a hundred times. If I ever see it in a charity shop I buy it, carry it around, and pass it on to a friend. Another one I have read over and over is A Song of Ice and Fire by George R R Martin. It was his work which inspired me to write fantasy.
One of my favourite books more recently released, is The Book of Guilt by Catherine Chidgey, a book that makes you nostalgic for the unsettling whimsy of childhood.

What would you like to tell readers who have just discovered your books, but haven't read one yet?

Expect flowerly language. Originally, I felt that it was a downfall, but after showing my work to beta readers, I discovered it was a strength and certainly my voice. Expect the macabre and dark, morally grey characters and rich descriptions.

Who is the favorite character you created, and how did they come into being?

It's a real hard choice. One the one hand, I want to say Aunt Ruth from my first novella, The Dunworth Killings. I felt that she was a mix of a number of people I knew growing up, and I really enjoyed exploring her psyche.
The other character who I adore is Renn from my fantasy works. The three main characters I modled after different aspects of myself, and she represents the rage. I find such a level of catharsis when I write from her point of view.

What are your future plans as a writer?

Simply: to write. This is what I love the most in the world, and I have so much to say and give. I want to write and publish until my very last. Ultimately, I write for me, and there's so many more stories that I have yet to tell to the world.
