Embrace The Coming Storm (The Seven Sentinels of Camelot Book 1) by D.S. Williams

Book excerpt

Reaching the outer wall of the castle, a shiver of apprehension swept over my skin as I retrieved the enormous iron key from my purse. Monsieur Perrault had given it to us when we met him the previous day.

I saw Emma rubbing her hands across her upper arms, trying to warm herself against the sudden chill in the air. I suspected the same sense of impending doom I was experiencing was dampening her previous exuberance, but I couldn’t blame her. There was an air of strangeness hanging over the entire castle, the atmosphere oppressive.

Unlocking the heavy wooden gates proved easier than I’d expected; despite the general air of decay it seemed some regular maintenance was being done. The huge key slipped into the lock and turned easily. The gate opened smoothly, although it took us both to shove it far enough to slip inside. Our isolated location made me cautious and once inside I slipped the key back into the locking mechanism and turned it. I didn’t know this country, didn’t know the area and wouldn’t risk unwelcome visitors coming across us out here.

The Deadly Favour (The Woldsheart Chronicles Book 1) by Ruth Danes

Book excerpt

My darling friend,

I hope I find you well and that you may receive this letter. I know that Guy the Messenger will have returned to the Castle of the Eastern Coast by now, so everyone knows we are safe, but I want to write to you so we can communicate as we always did and to tell you what an official announcement may not.

I may send and receive letters. Lady Cerys and Lord Owen, the heads of this castle, have confirmed this. I trust this will reach you before you go to the convent, so I am sending it with my letter to our guardians. Lord Owen assured me that my letters will not be checked, but you will see that I am writing in the code we devised when we were girls. If I am to open my heart, I need privacy. If they do confront me, I will show them the code and your letters to me to prove we do no more harm than gossip. They have shown themselves to be decent, sensible people so far. I have to trust that my impressions are correct.

The Prince's Pursuit by Morgan Utley

Book excerpt

A couple weeks after Jane’s father passed away, her mother informed her and her brothers that they wouldn’t be buying a Christmas ham this year. She thought it would be wise to save the money, and Jane knew she was stressed about finances. Her mother’s weariness made her appear as if she had aged since her father died. Jane knew that she was in mourning, but it seemed to be more than that. She could tell that her mother felt as if the weight of the world was on her shoulders and didn’t know how she was going to be able to support her three children as a single mother.

Jane knew that she was going to have to step up in a big way. Her father gave her all the tools and knowledge to help her take care of things around the house and farm, and she was now going to have to apply them. She would not allow her family to become destitute. She stepped up and began doing all the chores her father did the moment he was gone. She was up early feeding, milking and giving water to the cows as well as the goats. Cleaning out stalls, feeding chickens, and helping her mother around the house. Luckily, with it being winter and snow on the ground, there wasn’t much to do outside, except make sure all the animals were warm. She was constantly on her feet all hours of the day, and in the evenings, hit the bed hard, instantly falling asleep, only to do same thing early the next morning.

Elspeth (Elspeth Book 1) by Sue Mydliak

Book excerpt

Days passed, like a slow river. Never rushing, just there.

“The Autumn Equinox is finally upon us.” Mother said. “It is when God gives his Spirit into the vines, which are now his blood.”

The look on my face must have expressed her cause for clarity.

“It’s merely symbolic, nothin’ more.”

I nodded in relief, but still didna like the idea that what we drink is blood. Spiritually or not.

“There is much to do today. Mabon is here, and the house is not ready. I need ye to collect leaves, flowers if there are any. Berries and vines too. Also, acorns, oh, and corn. They’ll look perfect on the door. Take a basket, there on the table. Be sure to put your shawl on and bonnet too. There’s a chill in the air.”

Polar Heat by Simone Beaudelaire

Book excerpt

Russell flipped on the light switch, thankful the power was still on… for the moment. Riley gasped.

“What?” he asked.

“You… you… you're naked,” she burst out, turning her back on him as though examining the wall with great intensity.

“Oh, right. Sorry. I'll be right back.” Grinning, he stalked through his great room and into the bedroom, where he pulled out a pair of lounge pants and a sweatshirt. Might as well be comfortable. When he returned to the living room, he found Riley still standing by the wall, looking nervous.

“Welcome to my home,” he intoned, sweeping his arm to take in the space.

She turned to him, blinking. Then she looked around, apparently noting the sofa made of rough-hewn logs and cushions upholstered in red and black plaid, two leather armchairs, a brick fireplace, and a kitchen along one wall. A door led to his master suite. A staircase opened into a loft with guest bedrooms lining a balcony.

“Nice place,” she said. “Um, do you have a bathroom I could use? The cold, you know.”

Salvation's Kiss (Tales Of Mython Book 1) by Kathryn Jayne

Book excerpt

Cryptobiology class had a scarce attendance on a Wednesday. Such was often the case, as many of the students optioning this as part of their studies found this was the only class of the day, and often just borrowed the dictations from someone in attendance. Many took this class to fill out a resume aimed towards research and development rather than a medical career.

Everybody knew vampires made the best surgeons, due to their aptitude for the body’s systems, being able to anticipate the chance of bleeds and complications, and their speed. It was for this reason the profession was being dominated by them. Whereas shifters and their sensitive noses were able to find trace changes in body chemicals and the scents accompanying ailments, which made them perfect doctors, able to find illnesses in their patients often before symptoms were shown.

That was not to say non-preternaturals couldn’t make the grade, but the employment records favoured those able to execute their role to perfection, and it was no secret that most preternaturals had an extended life and thus amassed more knowledge and skills during the course of their service. Of course, many who would go on to this profession tended to be privately educated in leading-edge medical academies, meaning most academies, while offering the course, found its students took it out of necessity since it was offered as an extra-credit course, which was favoured alongside the R&D Degree.
