Excerpt from the book

A Freak Weather Incident

A sudden loud squeal, piercing through the night.

Jerome Adewale opened his eyes, the tentacle still locked tight around his neck. His vision was blurry now, but he could still see the other tentacle, locked on Arabella’s face, pulsing as it extracted her. Though, he was sure he saw it shimmer, just for a second.

Another squeal.

And then he felt himself falling.

He clattered onto his front on the muddy ground and began to cough so hard that he was sure he’d seen blood fly out of his mouth and seep into the mud.

He flicked his gaze to his side and saw Arabella plunge to the ground beside him. Bowler Hat Guy threw his head back, unleashing a chilling, otherworldly scream that echoed through the air, sending leaves fluttering from the trees as if a powerful wind had swept through. The tentacles started flapping around as if they were in revolt. Nested deep in the side of Bowler Hat Guy’s neck, Jerome spotted what looked like a craft knife, similar to the one that had once belonged to Tommy Wentworth. Blood trickled down the creature’s pale skin, looking like black oil.

He heard another screechy howl come out of Bowler Hat Guy’s mouth. Behind him and his flapping tentacles stood Olly Robinson and Samantha Hayes, mouths agape, staring up at the creature that Olly had just stabbed in the neck.

Bowler Hat Guy let out another piercing squeal. Jerome clasped his hands over his ears, watching him flounder backwards.

‘Let’s go!’ Sam yelled as she took Olly’s hand and ducked below one of the writhing tentacles that swung over them like a giant arm.

Bowler Hat Guy struggled to pull the knife from his neck, with his once-human hands now giant tentacles whipping back and forth in the moonlight. Eventually, he managed to wrap one around the handle, and when he yanked it out, Jerome saw a flurry of those worm-like things scatter onto the ground.

He looked to his right. Arabella was now sitting up and dazedly staring up at the creature that swayed before her.

‘Arabella!’ Jerome cried when he saw her crawling towards him. Her bloodshot eyes lethargically rolled to meet his. She got back to her feet and leapt into his arms, wrapping hers tightly around him. When she pulled back, he spotted blood dripping from her scalp, down to her forehead and cheekbones, framing her face in a grim crimson mess.

Bowler Hat Guy fell to his knees with a thud. One of his hands was now human again and was pressed against his neck, black blood continuing to leak out like water from a pierced hose.

‘Come on!’ Jerome yelled, gripping Arabella’s hand and squeezing it. ‘We’ve all gotta go, now!’

Olly and Sam began to run back up the hill, followed by Arabella.

Jerome, standing at the foot of the slope, glanced back at Bowler Hat Guy, his throat burning with every breath.

All he saw was a big black patch of dead earth. The creature was gone.
