Excerpt from the book
It had been another day in the Meridiana governing compound. Scientists moved about the facility to their labs as workers passed through the hallways. City workers were on site seeing upgrades and repairs. Adam stood tall, overseeing everything, as he took notes to bring to Gavin later in the afternoon. Everything was going smoothly inside the thriving city. The sanctuary's youth were growing, as was the community around them. It seemed all was right within the sanctuary walls and the compound's.
Cassandra sighed, drumming her pen as she looked up at the clock in anticipation. Only a few more minutes, and she'd be free to go down to the training facility for the day. She made a face. Dorian had insisted that she take anatomy as a higher education course in order to learn more about her body when it came to training. She remembered his words clearly.
"You're not old enough to even consider joining the day watch. You might as well put your time to some good use. Take a few courses, such as anatomy, and your AFTA. That way, if you decide being on the day watch isn't your thing, you can help Talon train others."
She rolled her eyes. The only thing she wanted to do was be a peacekeeper, and yet, at nineteen years old, everyone had told her she still needed to bide her time. She argued that her mother started hardened training at her age, but her complaints fell on deaf ears. Dorian had been firm about things even when it seemed like her mother faltered. Their scenarios had been completely different. Her father had backed everything the professor had said. She huffed and wondered what Cyrus was learning about. He was taking so many science courses that she couldn't even name most of them. However, they had all been developed by the professor and scientists in the compound. Most of the time, he shadowed those in the science facility instead of sitting in a classroom. Maybe her brother had it right. At least he was doing something he was passionate about, to the point where the professor even had him overseeing the main project currently taking place in the science facility.
Her eyes roamed over those in her class. Several people in it had been techs or scientists who were upgrading or changing departments. Her stare went to Julien, who had been sitting a few seats down from her. He caught her and smiled slightly as Cassandra felt her cheeks flush. He had come into the city five months ago and had been a year younger than her, although he didn't look it. He had brown curly hair and dark brown eyes. His crooked smile was infectious. Although he didn't live in the compound, he still did his studies here. As the clock ticked down, their instructor dismissed class for the day. Cassandra quickly grabbed her books and started out the door when Julien caught up to her.
