Fuck. My. Life.
Those three words continued running through Harper’s mind as she stood before the expansive hotel window, peering out over the Baltimore city skyline. It was the absolute last place she wanted to be.
In this city.
His city.
She’d managed to avoid Baltimore over the last several years, denying any request for a stop on her book tours. Did she feel bad about denying her fans the opportunity to meet her? Yes.
Enough to change her mind? Absolutely not.
And yet, somehow…here she was.
“Tell me again why we’re here,” Harper said, glancing over her shoulder at her assistant.
“Because you have a massive following here and fans are getting irritated that you never stop anywhere near Baltimore,” Mel explained as she leaned back on the sofa. “So, it’s time to suck it up, buttercup.” She waved a piece of paper around before sliding it across the coffee table. “I need you to review the agenda for the weekend.”
Harper spun around and crossed her arms over her chest, pinning Mel with a death glare.
“Y’know, I could just fire you,” Harper threatened.
Mel only laughed, completely unfazed, and shook her head. “Sure thing, Harp. Go right ahead.” She pointed to the chair across from her. “But in the meantime…sit.”
Harper sighed in frustration and rolled her eyes. They’d been friends for years, since her first book hit the bestseller list and she needed help. Mel was a godsend, and Harper knew she’d be lost without her.
“Fine, but I’m not happy about any of this,” Harper protested as she crossed the room, dropping onto the chair across from Mel.
“Duly noted,” Mel stated.
Harper plucked the printout off the coffee table and scanned the schedule. Multiple appearances were scheduled over the next few days. There were several signing events, a podcast interview, and a dinner meeting with a new marketing firm.
Her skin pricked with anxiety as she reviewed the list. Harper loved interacting with her fans and usually looked forward to every single stop on her tours. Her readers gave her a reason to keep writing. This time felt different, though.
This time, she couldn’t wait to get the hell out of town.
Harper only hoped the jampacked schedule would keep her mind occupied until it was time to catch a flight home.
Mel pulled a stack of books from a bag on the floor, dropping them on the coffee table, before unzipping a canvas pouch and dumping out several different pens and markers.
“I know you like to have choices when you sign,” she explained with a teasing smile, patting the top book. “Now, this stack is for the executives from PenPoint Marketing, the firm we’re meeting for dinner tonight. There’s also one for Darla.”
Harper gave her a questioning look. “Darla?”
“The podcaster,” Mel reminded. “You’re doing her show this afternoon.”
Oops. Right.
Harper scooted forward, opened the top book, and rolled a pen between her fingers before trading it for another. Satisfied, she signed the front page with a flourish before waving her hand back and forth, allowing the ink to dry.
