Cat’s Apartment
Brynn Certra blinked and looked around the room. Nothing was familiar. She could feel her heart rate increasing and started to sit up when a hand touched her shoulder.
“Brynn, it’s okay. You’re safe. It’s me, Cat,” Cat said in a calm voice.
“I’m at…your apartment? I don’t remember. We were in the elevator and I was going to order pizza…what happened? Why does my head hurt?” Brynn groaned and closed her eyes again.
“You fainted on our way inside. You don’t remember feeling woozy?” Cat asked her.
Brynn tried to mentally retrace her steps. They were at the library and Marcus…she swallowed hard. Marcus had been asking to meet Cat’s mom. She’d walked up right in the middle of that conversation. It still stung.
“Do you remember?” Cat asked her again. “Here, have some water.”
Brynn opened her eyes and slowly pushed herself up into a sitting position. She was on Cat’s bed, which felt intrusive. Had Cat slept on her sofa? Did she have a sofa? She looked at Cat. Her friend was holding out a glass of water. She took it from her and started to lift it to her mouth.
“Wait, you have the filter on your tap, right?” Brynn asked with concern.
Cat nodded quickly. “Yeah, this water is safe to drink.”
Brynn took a drink and then set the glass on the nightstand. “I’m trying to remember…is it still the same day? How long was I out?”
Cat patted her arm. “You weren’t out that long. I checked your vitals. Your pulse was strong; your blood pressure was steady. I guess your body just needed you to take a break.”
Brynn picked up the glass and finished off the water. “I don’t think I’ve ever fainted before. Maybe I am working myself too hard.”
“You might have just been dehydrated. How are you feeling now?” Cat asked.
Brynn lifted the quilt and sheet from her legs. She folded them over to the side and swung her legs off the bed. Her left leg felt sore. She rubbed it.
“Did I fall and bump my leg when I fainted?” she asked Cat.
Cat glanced at her leg and then met her eyes again. “Uh, let me think. It happened really fast. We’d barely stepped inside the apartment and you said something about feeling off. Then you just dropped to the floor right by the table. Maybe you bumped your leg on one of the chairs? I honestly can’t remember. Does your leg hurt?”
Brynn pulled the hem of her shorts up a few inches. She saw a round purple bruise on her thigh. “Huh, it’s almost like when we stab people with EPI pens at the clinic.”
