A Family’s Legacy of Secrets, Struggles, and Sacrifice

In a quiet South Indian town, the Dias family journeys through six decades of transformation, conflict, and resilience. The Shades of Honour is a sweeping family drama that spans from the 1950s to 2015, centering on Jared, the second son—empathetic, tormented, and steadfast in a world that constantly tests his values.

Through economic hardship, fractured relationships, and unspoken love, Jared becomes the emotional backbone of a family stretched thin by circumstance. A lifelong friendship, a rivalry born in youth, and a love he must forsake all shape his path. But when a murder thrusts him into the courtroom as a defendant, the trial becomes a crucible where truths long buried rise to the surface.

Told in a blend of past and present, the novel reveals how honour, loyalty, and love can lead to both salvation and sacrifice. It is a rich portrait of an Anglo-Indian family navigating social change, personal trauma, and the quiet heroism of endurance.

Excerpt from the book

A Glimpse of Characters

Jared Dias was a good-looking man of 60 years. He had a thick growth of salt-and-pepper hair worn slightly long. He had good features that were angular, but his eyes were the most expressive part. They could look dead, indifferent, cold, happy, and when he was angry, his eyes seemed to glow with rage. He had always had a moustache and a neatly trimmed beard, which was now mostly grey. He was slim-built and of average height, but if anyone looked closely, they would notice that he still had a good muscular structure. For his height and build, his strength had always been exceptional, even from his childhood days. His parents had named him Jared, but he had always been called Jay, while some of his friends called him JD. He had stopped studying after high school and had started working in a factory. He went through the stages of smoking cigarettes when he was just sixteen and then graduating to marijuana, locally called ganja, and drinking, before he was eighteen. He had quit drugs before turning 21, but he had never quit drinking, although he did slow down after his marriage. He had never looked for trouble, but yet trouble somehow seemed to always find him.

At the age of 25, he had married Anita Kumar, a good-looking Tamil Hindu girl who converted to Christianity before she married Jared. She was smart and always calm, and in her quiet way, she had exerted a lot of influence on her husband and had changed him in many ways. A religious person, she had devoted her time between her home and two children and her church. She had died of a brain aneurysm five years before Jared’s arrest for murder. After marriage, Jared had gone abroad and began to change his life, returning home for good after fifteen years. On his return, with the help of his childhood friend Vijay, he went into business and had been doing reasonably well for the past ten years. Until, that is, he was arrested for murdering Suresh in Vijay’s home.

Vijay was a thin, less-than-average-height man, who had never been physically strong. He had a slightly comical but also sad-looking face, which generally made women want to mother him. His family was in the jewellery business and very rich. Vijay was a kind-hearted soul who would help anyone in distress and hated violence of any kind.

Suresh had always been well-built, dark, above-average height, and quite good-looking. His family was in business and had always been rich; and Suresh, as a result, had always felt entitled. In school, he had never tired of boasting of the money he had, and he would spend money on guys only if they acknowledged his leadership. Most of them praised him while he spent his money on them and sneered at him behind his back. Jared, Vijay, and Suresh studied together up to high school.
