Excerpt from the book
Juliet was in the study where she often waited for Jack. It was the best place in the house to see someone drive up and the sofa was very comfortable. She had fallen asleep reading a book after he called to let her know the dinner went well, and he was on his way. She didn’t like to text him knowing he was driving so once he hung up the phone, any more questions about how the dinner with potential clients went, would have to wait.
She awoke to Jack kneeling in front of her; the dim lighting must have allowed him to sneak in on her. She must have been sound asleep for him to drive up, park in the garage, and find her in the study. He was saying something very softly while she was still waking up. She was relieved he was finally home. She couldn’t wait to hear the rest of the story behind how the dinner went.
“Jack! You’re home. What took you so long?” she asked, sitting up, swinging her legs off the couch, and facing Jack.
“Something has happened and you have to know I love you very much,” he said barely above a whisper.
“Yes, of course you do, I know that,” she replied. “Wait…what’s happened? Are you okay?”
“No, you have to listen to me,” he said, taking her by the shoulders and making her look only at him. “Something bad has happened. I’m not sure what’s next. You have to know I love you, the kids, everything we’ve built. YOU have always been at the center of everything I’ve done and the love of my life,” Jack said, straining to talk barely above a whisper.
Juliet noticed an odd mark on his neck and the holes in his suit. A frantic look came over her face. She tried to stand but Jack had a firm hold on her shoulders making her remain seated on the couch.
“Jack?”
“I don’t know if I have much time. I don’t know why this had to happen now, but it did. The timing of it all stinks. I love you.”
“I love you too. The timing of what…” As Juliet spoke these last words, Jack was engulfed in a very bright light. He looked upward as if searching to find the source. The light began to sparkle around him as if someone had let off a firework at his feet. He lowered his head in order to look directly at Juliet. Their eyes met. That look would stick with her for the rest of her days.
Juliet’s eyes sprang open to find the bright lights were gone, Jack was gone, and she heard a bell off in the distance. It was her doorbell; she’d been dreaming the whole time. She sat up on the sofa and looked out the doorway of the study, through the foyer to see three people standing on her doorstep…
