Time is Shifting—And She’s the Key

Renata Aguillon never asked to be exceptional. A quiet ornithologist still mourning the loss of her best friend, she finds solace in the natural world—until the starling murmurations she studies begin pulling her through time.

What starts as a disorienting anomaly soon reveals a deeper truth: time is unraveling, and Renata is not the only one caught in its snare. Hunted by shadowy forces and guided only by Collin Ainsworth—a physicist from 1986 with his own secrets—Renata must navigate collapsing timelines, rogue zealots, and a future on the brink of ecological ruin. At the heart of it all lies a device that could either stabilize the timeline… or erase it completely.

Time Murmurations is a poignant time travel adventure that blends science fiction with emotional depth, following one woman’s journey to confront her fears, trust herself, and take control of a power that could reshape the future.

Step into a story where the past, present, and future collide. Read Time Murmurations today.

Excerpt from the book

I’ve gone away. And I wonder, do they notice? I am here but not. I smile and nod in suspended greetings. But it really isn’t me. Instead, it is the frozen persona that waits here while I journey. This adventure hasn’t taken me far, perhaps half a second away.

I make excuses for this microsecond delay. I say I’m tired or not feeling well. But the truth is I am somewhere else. And this place cannot be shared. Not that I’m completely alone in this place. It is just that most of us are so inured in the work that there is no time to chat.

Well, that’s not completely true. We all have time. It’s exactly what that nanosecond is about. Time. That tightly woven baseball of flying moments where we who work with the delay play our own game. But this game isn’t about hitting a ball with a stick. In this game, we unravel the threads of the ball one by one to look backward.

And what do we see, you may ask? Is there a tunnel of light? A black hole of oppressive gravity? Or a storm of electrons traveling from atom to atom? I wish I could answer you in words you’d understand, but I can’t. This place is felt more than seen.

Time. What is it? How do we even know that it exists? In starling murmurations, time is coordinated so perfectly, not a single wing brushes the other. Ornithologists, like myself, aren’t exactly sure how a murmuration forms, but we do know the sequence of these scale-free correlations. As soon as one starling mirrors seven neighbors, the next group of seven does the same, continuing until they are not simply flocking but moving as one.

An ever-evolving cloud.

The word murmuration comes from the sound starlings’ wings make when thousands flutter together in one large liquid mass. This synchronized twisting and turning often occurs over a roosting site, where they rest for the night. We believe that this is why most murmurations occur at sundown. While starlings separate into small groups during the day to feed, they flock in vast numbers when shadows grow long.

Creating the interwoven space we use.

While many humans revere the starling for its insect control, others deem it an invasive species. With long beaks, they cannot crack hard shells. Instead, these omnivores have a varied diet including caterpillars, mealworms, beetles, crickets, spiders, fruits, thin-shelled seeds, and, in urban environments, landfill waste. They also steal resources such as barley intended for cattle on farms, with a propensity to feast on farmed fruits and vegetables.

However, I love starlings. How could I not? They carry wild berry seeds to different areas, enabling the plant to spread and grow. They are also pollinators, assisting giant lobelias, for example, in cross-fertilization. And of course, their murmurations are the crux of time.

Between those wingbeats lies the empty space we use. Think of how the largest proportion of atoms seems to be unoccupied, and you will find the invisible forces that exist in the emptiness. These powerful fields fuel our journeys.
