Ride the Wake. Find Your Voice.

Fifteen-year-old Hudson Holloway is fearless behind a boat—but off the water, life is messier. After a family tragedy and years of battling social anxiety, Hudson finds solace only in wakeboarding, where every new trick is a step toward something bigger. When a surprise win launches her into the national spotlight, Hudson enters a world of elite competition, unexpected friendships, and high-stakes choices.

As rivals rise and the future of women’s wakeboarding is thrown into question, Hudson must decide who she wants to be—an athlete who plays it safe, or someone who speaks up when it matters most. Set against sun-drenched lakes and adrenaline-fueled competitions, Wake the Lake is a story of resilience, growth, and standing tall even when the water gets rough.

Excerpt from the book

Hudson soared. The wakeboard, an extension of her body—a fiberglass limb—defied gravity. She propelled off the wake into a tantrum, flipping backward, the world spinning—sky, water, sky—and then stuck the landing with a satisfying slap against the surface of Lake Watanabe, a small lake in North Florida.

“Nice one, Huddy!” Jim’s voice cut through the rush of wind and water. He throttled back on the speedboat, his eyes tracking his daughter.

“Again?” Hudson called out, her pulse racing.

“Hit it,” Jim responded. The boat’s engine growled in agreement as he accelerated.

The rope tightened, yanking Hudson forward, and she crouched, ready for the next launch. Airborne again, she went for a whirlybird—spinning, twisting, the sun flashing in staccato bursts behind her closed eyelids.

“Keep it tight,” Jim advised over the roar.

She landed rough but upright. Water sprayed like applause, and she waved at Jim, acknowledging the tip.

“More height next time,” he yelled back, steering the boat in a wide arc to give her another run.

“Got it,” she muttered to herself, setting her stance and focusing on the next challenge.

Evie watched from the shadowed porch of the lake house, her wheelchair positioned so she could see every arc and twist Hudson made on the water. Evie’s voice rang out as Jim slowed the boat near the dock, creating a gentle wake that lapped against the wooden planks. “Looks like you’re finally getting the hang of it,” she called, her tone laced with thinly veiled sarcasm.

Hudson’s guarded expression didn’t waver as she glanced toward her mother. “Sometimes,” she replied coolly, barely loud enough to be heard over the water and the distant laughter of other boaters.

Evie motioned for her to come in, hoping to get a few moments alone with Hudson away from the blazing sun.

Hudson scoffed and dipped her hand into the refreshing lake, pointedly avoiding Evie’s gaze. “Maybe later. I need more practice,” she said dismissively.

The boat circled back, and Jim gestured with a nod. Hudson exhaled, gathering her nerves like she gathered the towrope.

“Really, Huds, a break won’t hurt,” Evie insisted, knowing the words would float away unheeded.

“Can’t,” was all Hudson said before she cut across the water. She spun high above the lake’s surface, her heart pounding with the thrill of flight and the fear of falling. When she landed smoothly, she allowed herself a rare smile.

“Looking good, Huddy,” Jim shouted from the boat, his voice laced with pride.

“Again,” she called back, resetting her position.

“Your form’s getting sharper every day,” he said as he throttled the engine.

“Needs to be perfect,” Hudson responded, staring at the horizon, where the next trick awaited.

As Jim watched his daughter’s relentless practice, the tightness in his chest grew. The boat needed maintenance he couldn’t afford, and Hudson’s gear was showing wear. He’d do anything to keep her on the water, but each bill was an anchor. “Let’s take five?” he suggested, hoping for a moment’s reprieve.

“Can’t stop now,” Hudson replied without looking back.
