Excerpt from the book
When I first hear the explosive BOOM, I’m confused. It sounds so much like a transformer getting struck by lightning. But I’m on an airplane and the sound is quickly followed by a burst of flames jumping in the wind just outside my window. The noise and resultant lurch of the airplane have the four vampire on their feet, abandoning their card game. The co-pilot disappears back through the cockpit door, closing it behind him. I hear someone screaming and realize it’s me.
The plane quickly levels out, though red and orange flames continue to taste the wind from inside the engine compartment.
“What was that?” “What happened?” Kate and Emma shout over one another.
Adrenaline makes the hair stand up all over my body as goosebumps erupt and my heart stutters.
“Stay in your seats,” my bodyguard Dex cautions us. He and my friend Janelle hurry to where Kate, Emma and I had been dozing. They stand in the space between our seats. “As soon as we know something, you will, too.” He nods toward the front of the plane, letting us know that he’s mentally communicating with at least one of the two pilots.
My other bodyguard Nicolette flings open the cockpit door, giving me a glimpse of pilots fighting and a panel full of flashing lights. Blaring alarms make whatever the yelling is about indistinct. I assume they’re talking about the engine that’s still belching flames, but without being able to make out any words, I’m clueless. Then Nicolette steps into the fray and closes the door behind her. The resultant quiet is unsettling.
“Wait, are those pilots fighting? Dex? What’s going on?” Kate demands.
Panic squeezes my chest and I’m gripped with a certainty that we’re going to crash. The the only way to kill the vampire may be to remove their heads from their bodies, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be seriously hurt. And I care too much about Dex and Janelle to see anything happen to them. “Ohmygod. Y’all have to sit down! Get seat belts on!”
“We’re fine, Miss Libby. Don’t worry about us. You three stay where you are. Janelle—”
Whatever Dex was going to say to her is cut off when the plane lurches again, and the nose dips into a dive.
Chaos erupts behind Dex when a pilot flies through the cockpit door, sending shards of the door in every direction. I’m not sure which pilot. Someone ripped off the vampire’s head and the body quickly turns to ash, leaving just an empty uniform where the body once lay. Nicolette yells, “Sabotage! Brace for impact!”
With that, she dives into the now-vacant pilot’s seat. Dex and Janelle share a pregnant look.
I stare stupidly out the window, watching flickers of red and yellow fight the wind. Sabotage? This wasn’t an accident?
“Can she actually fly this thing?” Kate asks.
“How are they going to land with only one engine?” Emma asks.
I blink away tears. Jo. Oh, goddess. Will I ever see her again?
Both of my friends look frantic, their faces pale and tear streaked, the whites of their eyes showing. Just like mine, I’m sure. “Nicolette can do anything, right Dex?”
