At eleven o’clock on a sunny Monday morning in June, a voice could be heard singing a very out of key version of John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads. It was Vegas Chantly singing from atop her Silverstream camper. Her shoulder length blonde hair was tied into a ponytail while she was positioned on all fours troweling on a thick white roof patch paste to try and stop a leak in an area over her tiny kitchen. She sat up on her knees and looked over her handiwork before she realized she got the roof patch all over herself.
“Well, it looks like I’ve waterproofed my roof, hands, and jeans,” she whispered aloud in slight frustration. She shook her head at the mess she had made for herself then looked over the roof patch. “As long as it stops leaking then that’s all that matters.”
She put the lid back on the bucket then grabbed it by the handle in her right hand and the trowel in her left then as she stood up, she heard a vehicle coming up the road. She glanced up and saw a white SUV turning into her camper lot and was not surprised by its presence. It was her mother Eleanor coming onto the scene, and wherever she went, chaos would surely follow.
Vegas walked to the east end of the roofline that overlooked her gravel parking area and stared down as she watched her mother park beside her yellow Volkswagen. The driver’s side door of the SUV swung open, and an empty Diet Coke bottle fell out along with an empty box of Fudge Rounds. Eleanor reached down and got them and threw them into the back floorboard between the front bucket seats. She slammed her door shut which caught the strap of her purse. She opened the door back up while muttering something about fried taters which Vegas knew was her substitution phrase for swearing and got her purse strap loose. She slammed the door closed while dropping her purse from her shoulder in the process. She quickly picked it up.
“Vegas!” Eleanor shouted as she walked to the front door and began knocking on it like kids demanding that the amusement park be opened.
“I’m up here!” shouted Vegas.
“Up here where?” shouted Eleanor. “Are you stuck in a tree? Mommy will call the fire department?”
“I’m up here!”
Eleanor stepped back and looked up at Vegas as her daughter waved at her. “Did you know that you were on the roof?” asked Eleanor.
“It crossed my mind.”
“What are you doing up there?”
“Hiding.”
“Hiding from what?”
“Hiding from who.”
“Who are you hiding from?”
“You.”
“You didn’t even know I was coming!”
“Mom, you’re always coming,” said Vegas.
“I’m just a concerned mother. When you have kids, you’ll be just like me down here on the ground wondering why they’re on the roof.”
“You’re probably right,” said Vegas with a smile.
“Speaking of kids, I watched the neighbor’s kid Juliette yesterday while her parents went to the Pancake Eating Contest.”
“Her parents entered a pancake eating contest?”
“No. Her dad made the pancakes for the contest. He’s pretty good at it too.”
“I’ve heard that he makes good pancakes. I bet watching Juliette was fun,” Vegas said knowing the little girl’s obsession for endless action.
