A Crime Fiction Series
Josie DuPuy by H. Berkeley Rourke
Series Excerpt
In the course of every homicide investigation there are elimination “rounds” of activity. In the case of Jeri Matson there was not a lot to go on at the outset so a number of “possibilities” had to be eliminated. Jeri was a young woman. Given the notion adopted early on by Janet about there being the residue of semen on the exterior of her vagina it was evident she was sexually active. But how old was she? They didn't know. Thus the first eliminative issue was identification.
Sometimes establishing identification is not so easy even though it seems like it should be the case. Janet attended the autopsy. She wanted to be able to tell Jim Cade and his troops the girl's name, age, etc. as soon as it was possible. The fingerprints had been obtained without the necessity of removing the skin from the fingers. The fingerprints were not well defined though and the normal number of reference points for a certain identification were not available. If the girl was in the system it would give up her name at the least. Then some additional information could be easily obtained. But Janet, Jaime, Josie and eventually Jim would find out that Jeri was not in the system. Of course by then they didn't even know her name. She was merely a pathetic child who had been brutally murdered. Jason Miller had chosen well.
