David J. Devine

Native San Franciscan David Devine is a second-generation Irish-American. He holds an Engineering degree from University of California, Berkeley. Having not suffered enough anguish from the corporate world he owned and operated a bicycle store.

David currently resides near the mist of Niagara Falls with his Grenadian (he swears she sounds Irish) wife. They also maintain a ‘shack’ in Grenada to escape the snow.

His first novel HIBERNIA is a heist at the Central Bank of Ireland. The tales read plausible as they are based in reality. Although a stickler for research Mr. Devine has the soul of a humorist.

He takes inspiration from Julia Child, Lee Trevino, and W.C. Fields. He is an avid chef. Do not ask for his guacamole recipe. There is none; it’s guacamole.

What inspired you to start writing?

Despite being a math/science person, I always found myself writing and editing: the high school newspaper for a free 6th period; university classmates who could not structure a sentence; proposals, justifications, etc.

Finding contract technical writing unrewarding to my pocket and soul, I tried my hand at short stories. After winning a "First Chapter" Contest, I wrote 31 more chapters and had my first novel.

I stretched myself and found my passion.

Who are some of your favorite authors and books?

Walter Isaacson, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

What would you like to tell readers who have just discovered your books, but haven't read one yet?

My fiction is fact-based, well researched and told with the soul of a humorist.

Who is the favorite character you created, and how did they come into being?

My characters are composites of a lifetime of friends, family, and acquaintances: the haughty Virginia judge, the portly printer, the Grenadian-Canadian.

I create characters I like and characters that repulse me. Regardless, their world is real, self-deprecating.

What are your future plans as a writer?

There is a fount of material for this fact-based novelist. I enjoy the process and find myself honing the craft like a brash rookie with talent morphing to a wily veteran.
