With rebellion rising in Hambara and Erian’s forces threatening war, Wolf splits to confront dangers by sea and land. Among them, Thadora—a noble raised in the streets—must navigate political intrigue and uncover the enemy’s true intentions before it’s too late. Excerpt from the book

Thadora picked up her lock picks and a long knife, climbed out of her bedroom window and dropped silently to the ground. She made her way across the stableyard, keeping to the shadows. Pausing at the gate, she checked in all directions. A horse snorted in the stables, but no one appeared. She sprinted through the gate into the parkland surrounding The Palace.

The Blue Lake sparkled ahead of her in the light of the two moons as she reached a wall. Jumping to a branch of a tree, she pulled herself up and climbed until she could reach the parapet.

She pulled a hood over her distinctive red hair, swung her legs over the wall, and dropped into the city. She wanted to practice her thieving skills but knew her father would disapprove. Perhaps simply getting into someone's house would give her the practice she wanted.

She did not need to steal anything. Not anymore. She and her mother had everything they wanted since the duke recognised her as his daughter. Her likeness to his grandmother, with her unruly red curls and laughing green eyes, made denying it impossible.

Duke Rollo admitted visiting a young courtesan at Madam Dopari's Emporium after the death of his wife. Although many young women of his own class would have been eager to console the lonely young duke, he had been deeply in love with his wife and could not bring himself to replace her with someone else. So, he resorted to a courtesan.

Thadora was the result.

The young woman made her way to The Warren, where she had lived while growing up. On arriving, she noticed some improvements. The smell of cat pee and rotting food, as well as human excrement that always hung around the narrow streets, had gone. She nodded. Her father had agreed to connect the homes in The Warren to the sewers.

On Thadora's insistence, he had not asked for payment.

The rich folk objected at first. They had paid for the connection, but their opposition eased when they realised that disease had lessened, not only in The Warren but throughout the city. There had not been any outbreaks of cholera or dysentery since all homes had been connected.

Thadora scanned the area.

There.

Across the street was a house with a glimmer of light coming from one of its windows. They must have decided to leave a crack open as it was a sultry night. Exactly what she needed for a bit of practice.

She scrambled up the side of the house. It was easy due to all the protuberances on the wall. Once she reached the roof, she crept along until she perched above the window. Letting herself down carefully, she stood on the sill and peered through the opening. A couple lay in the bed, asleep, a light snoring coming from the man.

Now she needed to open the shutter without them waking. The best tool for this job was a long knife. Thadora pulled it from her belt, inserted it into the crack, and found the catch. It was a matter of seconds before she lifted it and freed the shutter. Moving to one side, she opened it just enough and stepped through.
