Excerpt from the book

The stars twinkled like diamonds scattered across a velvet sky, casting a serene glow over the warm, crisp evening. A gentle breeze danced through Laura’s hair as she sat outside near the fire pit, roasting marshmallows with her best friend, Patrick.

Patrick was more than just a friend; he was her anchor, always looking out for her, always making her laugh. Tall and broad-shouldered, with sandy blond hair and glasses that framed his kind eyes, he had been by her side since high school. Even during her fleeting romances, Patrick was the constant, the one who never left.

“Hey, Pat, remember the drive-in back in ‘89?” Laura asked, a mischievous grin spreading across her face.

“Oh yeah, what was his name?” Patrick replied, his tone serious, as if he were recalling a historical event.

Laura chuckled, remembering the night vividly. She had gone on a date with Lance, her then-boyfriend, to the drive-in. She had never mentioned Patrick to him, and the disbelief on Lance’s face when Patrick showed up was priceless.

As the movie played, Lance pulled her closer, his hands wandering. Just as things heated up, the back door swung open, and there was Patrick, holding snacks. “What did I miss? You guys want some Goobers? They’re fresh today!” he announced, oblivious to the tension.

“What the hell? Who the hell are you!?” Lance shouted, his face a mix of confusion and anger.

“He’s with me!” Laura exclaimed, hastily adjusting her clothes.

“What?!” Lance was furious.

“Oh, sorry, how rude of me! I’m Patrick, by the way!” he said, extending his hand to Lance, who was still fuming.

“Dude, you see I’m busy here!” Lance snapped.

“Oh, no worries! I’m just here for the drama on the screen!” Patrick replied, deadpan.

Lance, clearly annoyed, stormed out of the car, slamming the door behind him.

“I didn’t like that one!” Patrick told Laura, a smirk on his face.

“Me neither! He had a small dick!” Laura laughed, the tension dissipating as they shared a moment of camaraderie.

They spent the rest of the movie joking and teasing each other, their bond unbreakable. Patrick climbed into the passenger seat, and they continued their playful banter, oblivious to the world outside.

“Hey, you want a s’more?” Laura asked, her mouth full of gooey chocolate and marshmallow.

“No, but I’d love a peanut butter and mayo sandwich!” Patrick replied, grabbing two pieces of bread.

“How can you still like that combo? It’s like you’re pregnant!” Laura grimaced.

“You can’t say yuck unless you try it first!” he challenged.

“Fine, one day I’ll give it a try, but my taste buds want s’mores now!” she said, taking a big bite, chocolate dripping down her chin.

“You look like a vampire clown!” Patrick laughed.

“I am!” she declared, jumping up and chasing him around the fire pit, their laughter echoing into the night.

But as the sun dipped below the horizon, a shadow loomed over their blissful evening. Laura noticed a young man throwing trash from a distance, coming from the old house on Wickers Street. She had thought no one lived there, but every weekend, she heard music blasting from the top floor.
