Excerpt from the book

The years since her daughter Joanne’s birth had been happy, and Luna Bevan had taken to motherhood with aplomb. She had made mistakes and intended to make up for them, learning lessons from her own parents’ behaviours and how she herself had reacted…

Luna Bevan and Mark Blake were married on their daughter’s sixth birthday, a private ceremony in the garden of their Oxford home. Joanne was the perfect pink bridesmaid, with her father in a tailored blue suit and her mother in a split-legged, tight-fitting, light-blue dress. Pink, white and blue flowers lit up the scene as friends mingled together, happy to celebrate the new Mr. and Mrs. Bevan-Blake. Mark’s father, Morgan Blake, had made an appearance, but his visit ended quickly after a blazing row with his son. Morgan had left, but not before giving Luna a peck on the cheek and his granddaughter a big squeeze; Joanne had yelped in delight. The altercation forgotten, the gathering danced and celebrated into the early hours. Mark and Luna were thankful they could afford such a luxurious wedding and that the caterers would do the clearing up.

Married life hadn’t changed Luna’s routine, she read the news that morning as she usually did, back from the school run, accompanied by a traditional English cup of tea. Her husband, Mark, had been out early; police work rarely had regular hours. A headline caught Luna’s eye.

‘American scientific HCI breakthrough.’

She scrolled through the short article. An unnamed company was about to undertake trials for a human-computer interface. It involved reading brain activity and then translating the results into commands. It seemed an age since she’d first realised the capabilities she had, the ability to interface with and control networks. Luna didn’t know if her daughter had the same capabilities and, in truth, she didn’t really want to find out.

Memories of Luna’s past came flooding back. She and Mark had been drawn into a world of lies, deceit and death, and they’d both played their part. Luna and Mark had left Miami and their criminal past nearly six years before. The Bachello crime family, particularly James and Linnata Bachello, had been quiet ever since, except for congratulatory messages when Joanne was born.

Luna would always have the scourge of her abilities derived from her modified digital DNA sequencing. Her parents had been seduced and manipulated by two professors, Scott Leeming and Fabio Binoa, into an experiment with Luna’s DNA. She had always felt she was paying the price for their success. But Luna’s senses were now being bombarded by new thoughts… from her daughter, Joanne. Luna had ignored them up to now, unable to comprehend how they were happening and worrying about the impact they might have…
