This Old Man Came Rolling Home (Flash Finnegan Series Book 4)
Flash Finnegan Returns in Kauai
At the prestigious Five Roses estate on the lush island of Kauai, an elite guest list gathers for a high-profile United Way fundraiser. Among them are a local police chief, internationally acclaimed author Elizabeth Collier, and Flash Finnegan—a former Seattle detective seeking a quieter life. But when a drone explosion kills a cook and shatters the evening, the tranquil setting turns into a complex crime scene.
Teaming up with Dr. Marilyn Bell, a brilliant criminologist from Los Angeles and an increasingly important presence in his life, Flash is pulled back into a world of high-stakes investigation. As evidence mounts, the case grows more puzzling, raising questions of intent, identity, and motive. With cutting-edge forensic tools and a trusted circle of investigators, they work to uncover the truth behind a crime that quickly escalates beyond a single incident.
Set against the striking beauty of Hawaii, This Old Man Came Rolling Home delivers a fast-paced mystery filled with sharp twists, evolving relationships, and relentless pursuit of justice. As danger spreads and more lives are at risk, Flash must confront both old ghosts and new threats in a case that refuses to stay contained.

Flash and Marilyn now sat side by side in the back seat of Pika Kekoa’s Kauai Cab, driving slowly through what passed for rush hour traffic on the outskirts of Lihue, heading north. Marilyn had just arrived on Kauai from Los Angeles that afternoon. They'd had enough time for a quick swim at Poipu Beach across the street from Flash’s old-new cottage and then to dress for the gala.
Referring to Kauai Police Chief Samson Aukai, Flash said, “This was Samson’s idea. He thinks my attending Elizabeth Collier’s charity event will improve my image in the community.” Flash looked at Marilyn, wondering how she would react. Seeing her triggered the thought that Marilyn Bell, PhD, had taken “Hawaiian-style evening attire” to a new level. She wore a raw silk jumpsuit with a Hermès Emile et Une Nuit scarf belt, blue and white Hermès Bouncing Sneakers, a Pupu O' Niihau Shell Lei necklace, a man’s solid gold Rolex that hung loosely on her left wrist, along with three colorful twine peace bracelets. Her nail polish and lip gloss were a muted coral.
Flash remembered the inscription on the back of the watch: “To the Brightest Star in the Firmament.” The guy who gave it to her knew how to make a point. Her blonde hair was straight and cut just above her shoulders. Her scent was mildly tropical, mysterious, and undoubtedly expensive.
She smiled and said, “If you would stop killing people, they might find warming to your beach bum charm easier. Isn’t that right, Pika?”
Pika turned around, smiled, looked back at the road, and said, “Flash is a VIP. The Colliers should be honored that Flash and his VIP friend are attending. That’s what I think.”
Flash said, “Go to the head of the class, Pika.”
“I’m almost there, Boss. Right behind Marilyn,” Pika agreed.
The three of them laughed.
Twenty minutes later, the cab turned onto Kilauea Road, accelerating toward the ocean and the famous lighthouse that had been the site of a shootout between Allied Logistics Chinese security agents who attacked Kauai police officers and Flash a couple of years before.
Their destination, Five Roses, was a fifty-acre estate overlooking Kauapea Beach, also known as Secret Beach. The proprietors were Canadian novelist Elizabeth Collier and her manager husband, Edward M. Collier III. The couple spent winters on Kauai and the rest of the year in Eastern Canada, alternating between a home in the historic Rosedale district of Toronto and a twenty-room cottage on an island in Georgian Bay, Ontario.
