Excerpt from the book
The five men playing cards were oblivious to their surroundings, the cards holding all their attention. But one of the five players was never oblivious to his surroundings, and he was aware of everything going on in the saloon even as he concentrated on the game. They were sitting around a table in the Wind River Saloon in the booming town that was now being called South Pass City. Chance Mallory was a big man – six foot one inch in his socks, with broad shoulders, a deep chest, and muscled arms. He had broad features, a square jaw, and soft brown eyes. He was a quiet man who never raised his voice when speaking, but he had a commanding presence that always made a person take a second look.
He was aware that the saloon was filling up and that two of the card players were cheats. He was also aware that they were playing as a team. Whenever one of them was dealing, Mallory never bet much, but he soon realized that the target of the two cheats was the man sitting between them, who had said he was a miner named Wilbur. That he was a miner with money in his pocket was obvious to everyone, as there was a lot of his money on the table. Mallory knew that the end of this game was fast approaching. The two gamblers had endeavored to increase the money in front of Wilbur and would occasionally comment on his lucky streak. Mallory had seen it all before and knew that they were fattening the calf for the kill. They would soon take Wilbur for all he had by ensuring that he was dealt what looked like an unbeatable hand. Mallory had no intention of getting involved, as he firmly believed that if a man gambled, then he took his chances.
But he was aware that a man had come up to stand right behind Wilbur, and that man was exchanging glances with the two cheating gamblers. Mallory sighed inwardly as he realized that this game was different. The two gamblers weren’t boosting Wilbur’s confidence to make him go all in on one game and then cheat him of his money. They intended to accuse Wilbur of cheating and then kill him. Which could mean that Wilbur was carrying a lot more money on him than what was on the table, or there was something else that Mallory was not aware of. There was a big pot to be had, and Wilbur won it. He gleefully gathered up the money and declared, “You boys were dead-on right! I got me a real lucky streak going right now!”
