A killer leaves bodies. The dead leave clues.

Widowed psychic investigator Lilly D’Angelo is used to ghostly visitors. But when three spirits from different states appear in her bedroom—all victims of bizarre, ritualistic murders—she knows this case is different. Something dark is moving through the Midwest, and it’s not finished.

As part of Kansas City’s Special Paranormal Investigation Unit, Lilly follows spectral signs across state lines, uncovering cryptic symbols, elemental patterns, and a chilling plan that points to something far more sinister than a lone killer. Tensions rise as she’s forced to mentor a new team member whose talents may eclipse her own, all while racing to prevent a mass casualty event on the summer solstice.

Fast-paced and layered with paranormal intrigue, Unfinished Business is a gripping mystery where the dead won’t rest—and neither will Lilly.

Excerpt from the book

Contrary to all the creepy stories out there, restless spirits don’t just appear when a clock bongs out the arrival of the midnight hour. Lilly D’Angelo opened one eye and read the glowing numbers on the bedside alarm clock—4:23 a.m.

She groaned. It was too early to rise but too late to properly zone out for a while longer. Opening the other eye, Lilly examined the still dark bedroom. She already knew she had a visitor. That part of creepy ghost tales was true—they heralded their appearance by chilling a room.

She wasn’t scared; she hadn’t feared these regular nightly hauntings for years. The annoyance of having her sleep interrupted—that still rang true.

There it was—a vague gray shape in the corner interrupting the blackness of the room. Lilly turned on the dim light she always kept on the bedside table. The form was shrouded in a mist that flowed down the ghost’s body in silver strands like rain. She leaned forward, trying to bring the apparition into better focus. It was slender, but she couldn’t determine if the figure had once been female or male. She guessed the person had been young in life, judging by the thin build and the easy way it moved. It was harder to imagine why mist shrouded the figure’s features. Was the manifestation incomplete for whatever mystery-of-the-universe reason, or was it related to the manner of its death? The apparition turned its cowled head and looked around as if confused. It was male, her intuition whispered.

“You’re probably wondering where you are and how you got here,” Lilly said from the bed. The ghost whirled around and focused on Lilly as if realizing he wasn’t alone. He tried to speak, but ghosts—at least the ones who visited Lilly—had no voice. He gesticulated, arms and head shimmering as he faded in and out. Whatever message he was trying to convey by pantomiming made no sense to Lilly.

The recently dead were always shocked to find themselves in Lilly’s company. Something sudden and disastrous had happened to them. Sometimes, they knew what had happened. Sometimes not. They found themselves in unfamiliar surroundings in the presence of a stranger—in this case, in the stranger’s bedroom. No wonder they were confused.

“Don’t fret, we’ll figure it out,” Lilly told him.

There was more soundless movement and wild gestures.

People who died peacefully—without violence, disbelief, or fear—quickly slipped from life to wherever souls went next. The ones who came to Lilly had unfinished business, or they wanted justice for their deaths. Until that happened, they were stuck between life and the hereafter.

Why her? Lilly had never been sure. She just knew she’d always been a magnet drawing in unsettled spirits. That was her skill set as a member of the small group of investigators with paranormal talents. People going about their daily lives might not be aware of the existence of the Paranormal Investigations Unit, but most people in law enforcement had heard about them.
