Biography
I am 65 and retired last year from my job with a community mental health team in Nottinghamshire. This work inspired my first novel; ‘Ask Me Now’ published by Chipmunka in 2009. It takes a sideways look at the subject and one of the challenges was to get some humour into the story.
This has always been important to me and the writers I enjoy most, like Beryl Bainbridge or Kingsley Amis, have strong comedic roots. Another strain of modern literature that’s been inspiring is the Rupert Bear annual. I loved them as a child and when I read them with our daughter we used to enjoy putting alternative bits in. Usually casting Rupert in another light; bullying the Pelican or smoking in his Father’s shed with the naughty fairy.
This got me going with my own new adventures of him and his chums. I have exchanged emails with the Rupert establishment – the Friends of Rupert Bear – and they are happy for my book to come out. I’ve also tried to communicate with the Daily Express but have not had any response to two emails.
I have also published two books about jazz with Soundworld Editions, and another novel: ‘Northtown Exposure’ about a small football club with Olympia in 2016.
At present I am working on a novel about a dance-band musician who pioneers freely improvised chamber music. It covers quite a wide stretch of time from 1919 up to 1970 and I try to cover several cultural and historical areas. I’m about two-thirds of the way through what will be the longest book I’ve produced yet.
As far as my expectations of your involvement go; I like the publishing cycle set out on your site and that if you are prepared to invest in my book, I would be able to play an active part in some promotion and marketing ventures. This was the case with my earlier book’s and I picked up some useful contacts in the process.
