The Battle of Mons Graupius, 83 AD
As the Caledonian spies paced nervously, their leader, a fierce warrior named Torcull, relayed the troubling news. The Romans had sent their formidable governor, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, north with one goal in mind: to lure the unconquered Caledones into battle. This was something the tribesmen had skilfully avoided for years, knowing of the Romans’ superior military strength. But now, with Agricola’s fleet already causing chaos along the coast, it seemed inevitable that a confrontation would occur. As Agricola marched closer with his light infantry and Rhenish auxiliaries, the Caledones prepared for what could be their last stand. When the Romans reached their territory and threatened to take their main granaries, filled with the precious grain crop, the Caledones knew they had no choice but to fight or face starvation over the harsh winter ahead.
The Caledonian clan leaders listened to Torcull’s report, dismay etched on their faces, except for one twenty-year-old, a new father of a baby boy, with a character as fiery as his red locks. Calgacus might have been young compared to the other chieftains, but when he spoke, his words carried the weight of a seasoned warrior. His gaze hardened as he addressed the gathered leaders, his voice resonating with a fierce determination that belied his youth. “Brothers,” he began, his tone commanding attention, “we stand on the brink of a battle that will determine the fate of our people. The Romans may outnumber us; they may have better weapons, but we have something they will never possess – the spirit of freedom that courses through our veins.”
His words sparked a fire in the hearts of those around him, reigniting the flickering flames of hope that had almost been extinguished by the incoming tide of Roman oppression. The clan leaders nodded in agreement, their expressions shifting from despair to defiance. Calgacus continued, his voice rising with each word, “Today, we fight not just for ourselves, but for our children, for our land, and for the very essence of who we are as Caledones. Let us show these Romans what it means to be truly unconquered! Let our swords sing with the fury of our ancestors, our shields stand firm as the mountains that guard our homeland. We will not kneel to the might of Rome; we will not yield to their tyranny. Today, we make a stand that will echo through the annals of history, a stand that will inspire generations yet unborn. So I say to you, my brothers, my kin, my fellow warriors – let us march forth with heads held high and hearts ablaze with defiance! Today, we fight not just for victory, but for our very existence as a free people!”
As his words hung in the air like an unspoken oath, the Caledones rose as one, their war cries piercing the sky and shaking the earth beneath their feet. The war cries were a deafening cacophony of voices in unison, like a storm brewing and breaking over the land. Each cry was filled with ferocity and a promise to never waver or retreat. The sound was raw and primal, echoing deep within the souls of those who uttered it. They rang out like thunder, shaking the very core of the earth and sending shivers down the spines of their enemies. With each cry, the Caledones were united, their voices merging into a powerful roar that could not be ignored or silenced. It was the sound of a people upsurging in defiance, ready to face any challenge and overcome any obstacle in their path.
With Calgacus at their head, a beacon of fiery determination in a sea of uncertainty, they marched towards the approaching Roman legions with a resolve that could not be quenched.
The Roman army, 30,000 strong, positioned themselves for battle. The allied auxiliary infantry stood in the centre with 8,000 soldiers, while 3,000 cavalry flanked them on either side. The legendary Roman legionaries waited in reserve, ready to join the fight if needed. On the Caledonian side, over 30,000 soldiers led by Calgacus were stationed on higher ground. Their front ranks stood on level ground, while the rest of their forces formed a horseshoe shape on the hillside.
