Excerpt from the book

Everywhere we turn, young people are being told to “change the world.”

It seems like everyone believes it’s our job to make things better. They say we have it easier than they did when they were kids, so it’s only fair we step up and create a nicer place for everyone.

I don’t know about others my age, but that feels kind of crazy. Like, parents, teachers, politicians—they’re all counting on us to fix the stuff they messed up. To clean up their problems. And honestly? That’s a lot to handle.

Don’t get me wrong, I want to help out and do my part. But, change the world? Where are we even supposed to start? What do we fix first? And how do we even know if what we’re doing is actually helping, or if we’re just making things worse?

Oh, I’m Seth, by the way. I have this weird ability—I can stop time. Sounds awesome, right? But honestly, it’s not as cool as you’d think. Every time I use it, I end up feeling super tired, like I’m getting sick or something. And even when everything’s frozen, it’s not like I can just mess around. If I move something the wrong way or make one tiny mistake, I could totally ruin the future for everyone. No pressure, right? So yeah, relaxing isn’t really an option for me.

OK, so, this whole time-freezing thing? I never even wanted it. Reuben—my friend—he’s the one who passed it on to me after an accident. Yeah, he can stop time too. He’s literally the only person I can talk to about any of this. I mean, who else am I supposed to tell? There’s no way I’m talking about this to anyone else. People would think I’m a total freak. My socials would blow up with jokes, or, I dunno, something worse.

So now I’m just stuck with this weird power I have to figure out on my own. Honestly, I’m pretty bad at handling it. It’s a lot to deal with, so most of the time, I try not to think about it.

But here’s the kicker. Having this power basically put a giant target on my back. See, there’s this insane group of dark angels called the Mabaya – they’re actually after me and Reuben. Their whole deal is stealing our powers so they can mess up the world or whatever. So yeah, I’m literally in danger every single day. And just when I think my life can’t get any weirder, something else totally wild happens.

Now you see why I don’t talk about this stuff? Who would even believe me? But seriously, I’m not making any of this up.

So when people start telling me to ‘make a difference’ or ‘change the world,’ can you really blame me if my first thought is to tell them to get stuffed.

“Hurry up, Seth!” shouted Josh.

He and Madi were waiting outside the English block while other students rushed past, pushing and shoving as they tumbled into their classrooms. They looked like balls rolling down a marble run, all jostling against each other but ultimately heading in the same direction.
