Emma Dredge

Emma Dredge, a freelance writer, has always been passionate about words. She has spent the last ten years writing stories for children which has helped her to gain a good understanding about what children like to read (and what they really don’t!)

As an educator and experienced classroom teacher, Emma believes that story telling is more than just words on a page and feels passionately about writing narratives for children that don’t just tell a story, but show a story. She loves to write stories that are funny, creative, imaginative and that recognise children’s natural curiosity.

Emma taught and lived in East Africa for many years, but now lives in the UK with her husband, two daughters, two cats and a dog named Wilf.

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS

Author interview

Interview submitted .

What inspired you to start writing?

I write because I can’t imagine not writing. From a small child I've always been inspired by words. Long words, short words, funny words, hard-to-say words. It amazes me how these little assemblages of letters can come together and inexplicably change moods, hearts, days and minds. My notebook and pen come with me everywhere. There’s nothing I love more than sitting in a coffee shop and scribbling ideas down on paper – old style.

Who are some of your favorite authors and books?

I love authors that make you think about the book long after the final page has been closed. Authors like Mitch Albom and Lucinda Riley are incredible.

But i also love anything that rhymes and adore the work of Jez Alborough and Julia Donaldson.

What would you like to tell readers who have just discovered your books, but haven't read one yet?

These books are unique in that they have been inspired by ideas from children living in the slums of Kenya. The proceeds of the books go towards helping these children continue their education. So by purchasing these books, you don't just get a lovely story, you get to keep an African child in school too!

Who is the favorite character you created, and how did they come into being?

All the characters have been based on amazing children that I have taught over the years, so I can't possibly have a favourite!

What are your future plans as a writer?

My writing is all about creating educational opportunities for children in low income communities in East Africa. We need to keep our schools open, so every penny raised from the books will go towards this. We can be found at in2edafrica.org
