Excerpt from the book

Raffael Aragon, Raffa to both his friends in the States and his friends and family back in his native Costa Rica, walked down the Avenue Franklin Delano Roosevelt toward the headquarters of his employer, Waveforce Aviation. After a quiet evening reading Mark Greaney’s latest Grey Man novel in his room, he enjoyed his normal room service continental breakfast on his room’s terrace before walking from the Hotel San Régis to his office. The mid-May weather in the City of Light was rather pleasant, and Raffael did not mind the six-minute walk from the hotel to Waveforce. His wife, Molly, thought he spent too much time reading spy and thriller novels, but he felt they were a great break from the fairy tales he read to his two young daughters.

Raffael crossed the Avenue Montaigne and followed the curved access road that led him to the ornate black and gold gate that marked the front entrance to Waveforce Aviation. He walked through the gate, jogged up the steps, and entered the French colonial-style building. After a quick Bonjour to the receptionist, he climbed the stairs to his second-floor office. He stopped at his in-office coffee maker to brew his second cup of the day. As his Waveforce-branded mug filled with French roast, he plopped down in his chair, pulled his laptop out of his computer backpack, placed it on his desk, turned it on, and opened his email.

The first email he saw was from Molly. Her email summarized the day she and their two young daughters had back in their home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She also attached a couple of pictures of her and the girls from the previous weekend at their grandmother’s house. It showed Molly and his girls playing in his mother-in-law’s pool with all three of them smiling broadly at the camera.

Ahí están mis chicas. (There’re my girls), he thought to himself with a smile.

Raffael worked as an international aviation consultant for Waveforce, and he traveled around the world working with his employer’s many customers. Since his job did not require a permanent office, he worked from his home in Virginia to be closer to his family, since Molly had a great job as a program manager with one of the many defense contracting companies that populated the Hampton Roads area. This trip, however, was one of his regular stops at Waveforce’s headquarters to meet with his bosses to brief them on his work to date.

After reading Molly’s latest, he checked the rest of his messages. He ran through the minutiae that any large corporation produces before noticing a message with an attached video file from one of his co-workers and friends, Philippe Micheaux. He opened the email and read the message.

Raffael opened the video file and saw it was the music video to the ABBA song, “Take a Chance on Me.” He looked at the video with a look of puzzlement.
